Description

What Is a Vacuum Filtration Manifold?

A vacuum filtration manifold is a multi-branch laboratory filtration system designed to distribute vacuum pressure across multiple filtration stations. In essence, it is designed to simultaneously filter multiple liquid samples through membrane filters under controlled vacuum pressure. A standard system consists of:

  • Filtration funnels or filter holders (glass or stainless steel)
  • Vacuum base manifold with independent control valves
  • Vacuum flask or waste collection bottle
  • Vacuum tubing connection
  • Membrane filter support (PTFE sieve plate or stainless steel mesh)

Compared to gravity filtration or single-filter setups, a manifold system reduces total filtration time, improves reproducibility, and eliminates cross-contamination risks when separate funnels or filters are used with independent valves.

Why Vacuum Membrane Filtration Is Used in Laboratories

Vacuum membrane filtration is widely used in analytical, microbiological and pharmaceutical laboratories because it provides faster filtration speed, improved particle retention and better reproducibility compared with gravity filtration methods.

By applying negative pressure below the membrane, vacuum filtration systems accelerate liquid flow while maintaining precise membrane separation performance. This makes vacuum membrane filtration ideal for:

  • Microbiological membrane filtration methods
  • Sterility testing
  • Mobile phase preparation for HPLC and LC-MS
  • Environmental water testing
  • Particulate contamination analysis
  • Sample clarification before instrumental analysis

Vacuum Filtration Methods in Laboratory Testing

Vacuum filtration is a standard laboratory method used in microbiological analysis, pharmaceutical quality control and environmental testing. It follows established procedures such as membrane filtration methods for microbial enumeration and particulate analysis.

  • Microbiological membrane filtration method (bacteria & yeast testing)
  • HPLC mobile phase filtration method
  • Environmental water testing method (E. coli, coliform detection)
  • Pharmaceutical sterility testing method

Key Features Across All Systems

  • Independent control valves– Each branch can be opened or closed individually, allowing flexible multi-sample operation.
  • PTFE sieve plates (glass models)– Non-stick, corrosion-resistant, easy to clean; pore size 20 µm ensures even membrane support without clogging.
  • Stainless steel mesh supports (SS models)– 100 µm openings for fast filtration; flame-sterilizable and autoclavable.
  • Auto-cooling fins (SS 3-branch)– Dissipate heat during prolonged vacuum pump operation, enabling 24-hour continuous use.
  • Low center of gravity (SS 6-branch)– Prevents tipping when handling heavy funnels or large sample volumes.
  • Standard vacuum connection– 9.5 mm hose barb compatible with common laboratory vacuum tubing.
  • Complete kits– Each system includes funnels, collection bottle, spring clamp, support base, and hosepipe.

Applications

  • Microbiological membrane filtration (bacteria enumeration, yeast/mold testing)
  • HPLC / UHPLC mobile phase filtration
  • Environmental water testing (total coliform, E. coli, suspended solids)
  • Pharmaceutical QC and sterility testing
  • Chemical and industrial laboratory filtration

Instrument & Accessory Compatibility

Our manifolds are compatible with standard 47 mm or 50 mm membrane filters (MCE, PES, PTFE, Nylon, etc.). Funnels accept standard filter paper discs. Components are interchangeable with most major brands (Millipore, Sartorius, Pall) – providing a cost-effective, high-performance alternative.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Can each branch operate independently?

Yes, all Hawach multi-branch manifolds have independent vacuum control valves. You can use one, two, or all branches simultaneously.

Are these systems autoclavable?

Yes, the whole set (glass or stainless steel) can be autoclaved at 121 °C (20 min). Stainless steel systems also support dry heat (180 °C) and flame sterilization on the filter support surface.

What membrane sizes are supported?

Standard 47 mm and 50 mm membrane filters are compatible with all funnels.

What is the advantage of PTFE sieve plates over glass frits?

PTFE plates are non-stick, chemically inert, and do not clog easily. Glass frits can become blocked by fine particles and are difficult to clean. PTFE plates are easier to maintain and last longer.

Are Hawach manifolds compatible with other brands’ filter holders or funnels?

Yes. The base manifold uses industry-standard connections, and funnels/filter holders from most major brands (e.g., Millipore, Sartorius) can be used interchangeably.

Can I use the system for viscous or particle-laden samples?

Yes. We recommend using a glass fiber pre-filter on top of the membrane to avoid clogging. Stainless steel supports with 100 µm openings handle higher particulate loads than PTFE plates.

Do you offer OEM / private label options?

Yes, we provide OEM labeling, custom packaging, and bulk supply for distributors and laboratory integrators. Contact us with your requirements.
