Extraction thimbles are cylindrical filter cartridges used in Soxhlet and similar extraction systems. Hawach cellulose extraction thimbles (also known as Soxhlet thimbles or cellulose extraction cartridges) are manufactured from high‑purity alpha cellulose without any binders. They are designed to hold solid samples while solvents percolate through, extracting target analytes such as fats, oils, pesticides, PCBs, and dioxins. With a nominal pore size of 8 µm and a maximum temperature of 120 °C, these thimbles offer excellent mechanical strength and consistent performance for routine analytical extractions.
| Feature | Cellulose Thimbles (Hawach) | Glass Fiber Thimbles |
|---|---|---|
| Max temperature | 120°C (248°F) – routine organic solvents | 500°C – high‑temp & acidic gases |
| Chemical resistance | Good with organic solvents, oils, fats; degraded by strong acids | Excellent with most acids (except HF); limited alkali |
| Pore size | 8 µm (nominal) | 0.8 µm |

Instruction Drawing

Cellulose thimbles are economical and ideal for routine solvent extractions at ≤120°C. Glass fiber thimbles withstand higher temperatures (500°C) and acidic gases, but cost more. See comparison table above.
No. Strong acids degrade cellulose. For acidic samples or gaseous acids, use glass fiber thimbles.
120°C (248°F). Exceeding this may cause charring.
Nominal 8 µm, retaining particles >8 µm while allowing fast solvent flow.
Yes. Hawach offers many dimensions that can replace Whatman thimbles. Always verify outer diameter and height before ordering.
Common organic solvents: hexane, petroleum ether, acetone, toluene, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and alcohols. Avoid strong acids and bases.
Yes. Cellulose is biodegradable and can be disposed of as organic waste after extraction (ensure no hazardous residues).
Not recommended. Single‑use ensures no cross‑contamination and reliable results. Some labs rinse and reuse for non‑critical applications, but we advise fresh thimbles for each extraction.
Measure the inner diameter of your extraction chamber; the thimble OD should be 1‑2 mm smaller. Height should be 5‑10 mm above the siphon tube top. See selection guide above.
Yes. They are used in AOAC Official Methods for fat determination (e.g., AOAC 954.02, 960.39, 991.36).
Yes, batch‑specific COA for dimensions, porosity, ash content, and extractable residue available on request.
Low ash – typically less than 0.2%, ensuring minimal interference in gravimetric analysis.
Yes. High‑purity cellulose thimbles are widely used for dioxin and PCB extraction from environmental samples.
