Reversed-Phase SPE Cartridge
Reversed-phase SPE cartridge uses non-polar adsorbents (carbohydrates or polymers) on the stationary phase to separate organic solutes from the polar phase (water).
The force between non-polar substances is van der Waals attraction, and the affinity of the agent to the solute mainly depends on its hydrophobicity.
- Reversed phase SPE cartridge stationary phase: non-polar
- The separation object of reversed-phase SPE cartridges: medium to non-polar substances
- Reversed phase SPE cartridges mobile phase: polar (aqueous solution) or medium polarity
- The force between adsorbent and compound of reversed-phase SPE cartridges: van der Waals force or dispersion force
- Commonly used reversed-phase SPE cartridges: octadecyl bonded silica gel (C18 SPE cartridges).
Features
- Hydrophobicity: Reversed Phase SPE cartridges are typically made of non-polar sorbent materials, such as octadecylsilane (ODS) or octylsilane (C8). These materials have a high degree of hydrophobicity, which means that they can retain hydrophobic analytes (such as organic compounds) from aqueous samples.
- Selectivity: The degree of hydrophobicity of the sorbent material can be adjusted to provide selectivity for specific types of analytes. For example, C18 cartridges are commonly used for the extraction of non-polar and moderately polar analytes, while C8 cartridges are used for more polar analytes.
- Capacity: High sorption capacity for hydrophobic analytes. This allows for the extraction of a large volume of sample without losing analyte.
- Compatibility: Compatible with a wide range of solvents, making them versatile for different applications.
- Efficiency: The packing material used in Reversed Phase SPE cartridges has a high surface area, which leads to higher extraction efficiency and faster sample processing times.
- Reproducibility: Designed for reproducible results, with consistent sorption characteristics from batch to batch.
