Hydrophilic Membrane Filter
The pores of the microporous membrane act as small capillaries. When the hydrophilic membrane filter comes into contact with water, capillary action related to surface tension causes water to spontaneously enter and fill the pores. In this way, the hydrophilic membrane filter is easily wetted and allows a large amount of water to flow through the pores.
Once wetted, the hydrophilic membrane filter will not allow air or other gases to flow in large amounts unless they are applied at a pressure greater than the bubble point of the membrane.

Features of Hydrophilic Membrane Filter
- Hydrophilicity/Water-Attracting: Hydrophilic membrane filters are composed of materials that naturally attract and wet with water. This property makes them ideal for use with aqueous solutions. Hydrophilic membrane filters have a high affinity for water and other polar solvents. This makes them ideal for filtering aqueous solutions, as well as biological fluids like blood or cell culture media.
- Low protein binding: Many hydrophilic membrane filters are designed to have low protein-binding characteristics, ensuring minimal adsorption of proteins or biomolecules during filtration. Hydrophilic membrane filters are designed to minimize protein binding, which can be a major problem in many applications. This helps to preserve the integrity of samples and prevent the loss of valuable biomolecules. This feature is crucial for applications like protein analysis and purification.
- High flow rates: Allowing for rapid filtration of large volumes of liquid. Hydrophilic membranes often offer fast filtration rates due to their water-attracting properties and the efficient flow of aqueous solutions through the membrane.
- Chemical resistance: Hydrophilic membrane filters are often made from materials that are resistant to a wide range of chemicals, including acids, bases, and organic solvents. These filters are typically compatible with a wide range of chemicals, solvents, and common laboratory reagents, enhancing their versatility in different applications. This makes them suitable for use in harsh environments.
- Low extractables: Designed to minimize the release of extractables, which are small molecules that can leach out of the filter and potentially interfere with downstream applications.
- Versatile Pore Sizes: Hydrophilic membrane filters are available in various pore size ratings, which can range from nanometers to micrometers. This versatility allows for fine or coarse filtration, depending on the application.
Hydrophilic membranes filter are usually used with water and aqueous solutions. They can also be used with compatible non-aqueous fluids. Hydrophilic membranes are generally not used for air, gas, or exhaust filtration because if they get wet accidentally, for example through condensation, the filter will block the flow.
