Description

High Flow Pre-Filtration for Viscous & Particle-Loaded Samples

Glass fiber syringe filters are depth pre-filtration membranes designed for high-flow sample clarification and particulate removal.

Hawach glass fiber syringe filters (GF) are high-flow, depth filtration membranes designed for pre-filtration, particulate removal, and clarification of highly loaded or viscous samples. Made from 100% borosilicate glass fiber, GF filters provide extremely high flow rate, strong dirt-holding capacity, excellent compatibility with aqueous & organic solutions, and reliable pre-filtration before fine membrane filtration.

Ideal for HPLC sample prep, biological fluids, fermentation broth, and dirty samples.

Recommended Choice for Pre-Filtration

Glass Fiber Syringe Filter (1.0 µm) – Standard or Sterile

  • High dirt-holding capacity – prevents clogging of final membrane filters
  • Extremely high flow rate – fast processing of viscous samples
  • Broad chemical compatibility – aqueous & organic solvents
  • Sterile option available for aseptic pre-filtration

Best used as first-stage pre-filtration before fine filtration (CA / PES / PVDF / PTFE)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a glass fiber syringe filter used for?

It is mainly used for pre-filtration and particulate removal in high-load or viscous samples before final filtration through a membrane filter (CA, PES, PVDF, PTFE).

Can glass fiber filters be used for sterile filtration?

No. GF is a depth pre-filter. For sterile filtration, always follow with a 0.22 µm membrane filter (CA, PES, or PVDF).

Are GF filters hydrophilic or hydrophobic?

Glass fiber is hydrophilic and inert, compatible with both aqueous and most organic solvents.

Why use glass fiber as a pre-filter?

Because it prevents clogging and dramatically increases the lifespan and throughput of final membrane filters – especially for dirty, turbid, or high-viscosity samples.

Can GF filters be used alone?

Yes, for clarification of particulate-loaded samples, but not for sterilization or particle-free final filtration.

Do glass fiber filters shed particles?

High-quality GF filters (Hawach) minimize shedding, but for applications where absolute particle removal is required, always use a final membrane filter downstream.

What pore size should I choose for pre-filtration?

  • 0 – 1.6 µm – heavy particulate load, viscous samples, fermentation broth
  • 0.45 µm – general pre-filtration before 0.22 µm final filter
