Description

Strong Cation Exchange Without Aromatic π-π Interference

PRS SPE cartridges use propylsulfonic acid bonded silica to provide strong cation exchange retention for weakly basic and positively charged analytes. Unlike conventional benzenesulfonic acid SCX sorbents, PRS phases do not contain aromatic rings, significantly reducing unwanted hydrophobic and π-π secondary interactions.

This difference is especially important for:

  • Weak bases
  • Pyridine-containing compounds
  • Basic dyes
  • Cationic veterinary drug residues
  • Alkaline pharmaceutical compounds

Because PRS minimizes non-polar retention, it often provides cleaner extracts, improved recoveries and more selective retention compared with traditional aromatic SCX sorbents.

Why Choose PRS Instead of Conventional SCX?

FeaturePRS (Propylsulfonic Acid)Traditional SCX (Benzenesulfonic Acid)
Functional GroupAliphatic propylsulfonic acidAromatic benzenesulfonic acid
Cation Exchange StrengthStrongStrong
Hydrophobic InteractionMinimalSignificant
π-π InteractionVery lowHigh

Extract CleanlinessHigher selectivity and lower backgroundBroader retention but more matrix interference

PRS SPE is often selected when conventional SCX SPE cartridges show excessive hydrophobic retention, poor recovery of weak bases or heavy matrix interference.

How PRS SPE Improves Weak Base Recovery

Traditional aromatic SCX sorbents contain benzene rings that contribute additional hydrophobic and π-π retention mechanisms. While useful for some analytes, these secondary interactions can cause excessive retention and incomplete recovery of weakly basic compounds.

PRS phases eliminate these aromatic interactions by using an aliphatic propyl linker. Retention is driven primarily by ionic interaction, making elution more predictable and reducing background interference from hydrophobic matrix compounds.

This is particularly beneficial for:

  • Pyridine derivatives
  • Basic heterocyclic compounds
  • Weakly retained cationic analytes
  • Trace residue analysis in complex biological matrices

Typical Applications

  • Aquaculture residue testing– malachite green and crystal violet in fish and shrimp
  • Environmental monitoring– cationic dye analysis in water samples
  • Pharmaceutical cleanup– extraction of weakly basic APIs and metabolites
  • Clinical toxicology– basic drug extraction from plasma and urine
  • Food safety testing– veterinary drug and dye residue enrichment
  • Analytical method development– selective cleanup for weak bases

Standard PRS SPE Workflow

  1. Condition– methanol followed by water or acidic buffer
  2. Equilibrate– adjust cartridge to acidic pH where analytes remain protonated
  3. Load– apply aqueous or diluted sample solution
  4. Wash– remove neutral and weakly retained matrix compounds
  5. Elute– use basic organic solvent such as ammonium hydroxide in methanol

Because PRS minimizes hydrophobic retention, stronger organic wash conditions can often be used without analyte loss, improving extract cleanliness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PRS and SCX SPE?

PRS uses aliphatic propylsulfonic acid chemistry and minimizes hydrophobic and π-π interactions. Conventional SCX sorbents contain aromatic benzene rings that can cause excessive retention of weak bases.

Why is PRS suitable for pyridine compounds?

Pyridine-containing analytes are often affected by aromatic interactions on traditional SCX phases. PRS improves selectivity and recovery by relying primarily on ionic retention.

Can PRS SPE be used for malachite green analysis?

Yes. PRS SPE is widely used for extraction and cleanup of malachite green, leuco malachite green and crystal violet in aquaculture and environmental testing.

Is PRS compatible with LC-MS/MS workflows?

Yes. PRS provides cleaner extracts with reduced matrix interference, making it suitable for LC-MS/MS residue analysis.

Do you provide OEM and bulk supply?

Yes. OEM cartridge production, private label packaging and bulk PRS sorbent supply are available for distributors and laboratory manufacturers.
