Three Kinds Of SPE Cartridges
Solid phase extraction, as we called it as SPE, is widely used for the pretreatment when the sample is analyzed. With SPE used for separation, the solution will be generally left behind by gravity or with a vacuum device to speed up the separation, and many of the problems associated with liquid/liquid extraction can be avoided, such as incomplete phase separations, less-than-quantitative recoveries.

SPE is an advance way to prepare liquid samples and extract semivolatile or nonvolatile analytes. The scientists often use it with solids that are pre-extracted into solvents as well. Compared with the liquid/liquid extraction, SPE is more efficient and easy to perform.

SPE is a physical extraction process consisting of a liquid phase and a solid phase. During the extraction process, the adsorption of the solid relative analyte is greater than that of the sample base.
When the sample passes through the solid phase cartridge, the analyte is adsorbed on the surface of the solid filler, and the other sample components pass through the cartridge analyte and can be eluted with a suitable solvent to achieve separation and purification.
Principle of SPE Cartridge
SPE Cartridge provided by Hawach Scientific is a separation technique combining selective retention and selective eluting. It also works as a sample pretreatment device for extraction, separation, and concentration. Currently, it is widely applied to the analysis of various foods, environmental and biological samples and so on.
When the liquid sample solvent passes through the adsorbents, it retains the tested substances, then selects the appropriate strength solvent to flush away the impurities, and then quickly elute the tested substances with a small amount of solvent, so as to achieve the purpose of rapid separation, purification, and concentration.
Usage of SPE Cartridge
In daily application, the SPE Cartridge can selectively adsorb impurities and allow the tested substances to flow out, or simultaneously adsorb impurities and the tested substances, and then selectively elute the tested substances with the appropriate solvent.
In reaction, the compound is adsorbed by reverse SPE or forward SPE and retained on the SPE packing, and the bonded phase has strong polar adsorption in the non-polar organic solvent and weak anion exchange retention.
Three kinds of SPE cartridges
There are three types of SPE according to the packing materials in the SPE cartridges, namely reverse phase extraction, normal phase extraction and ion exchange extraction.
1. The adsorbents used in normal phase SPE are all polar such as bonded silica gel, alumina, silica-silver, Florisil (2MgO·3SiO2), etc. to extract polar substances;
2. For reversed-phase SPE, the adsorbent used is usually non-polar or weakly polar such as C8, C18, phenyl column, etc. The target compound to be extracted is usually medium to non-polar;
3. The adsorbent used for the compound ion exchange type SPE is a charged ion exchange resin such as LC-NH2 (containing aliphatic quaternary propyl bonded silica gel), LC-SCX (containing aliphatic sulfonic acid bonded silica gel), etc. The target compound extracted is a charged compound.
