The Characteristics of Polymer Matrix Chromatographic Columns
The polymer matrix chromatographic column has five significant features:
Long service life
The polymer matrix chromatographic column is more stable than the silica gel matrix chromatographic column, which is not easy to deteriorate. Regarding the operating frequency, the silica gel column should be used for about 3 months. However, polymer chromatographic columns can be used for at least one year.
Great reproducibility
The quality of each batch of silica gel column will be slightly different. It is easy to control for the polymer chromatographic column in the production process, so the quality difference is relatively small. From the user’s point of view, while replacing chromatographic columns, we always hope to get the same test results as same as the previous ones. So we need different batches of the chromatographic column with small quality differences.
Well performance in alkaline conditions
Silica gel columns cannot be used in alkaline conditions. Alkaline samples must be separated well under the condition of an alkaline mobile phase. A polymer chromatographic column is better to analyze this kind of sample. In addition, if there are impurities in the column, the column can not be used. If it is a silica gel column, It can only be discarded; if it is the polymer matrix chromatographic column, you can wash it with an alkaline solution, then reuse it after removing the impurity.
The wide range of applications
Although the separation performance of the polymer column is sometimes worse than that of the silica gel column, only the polymer column can be used for separation in some special cases.
High Cost
Generally speaking, the price of a polymer chromatographic column is higher than that of a silica column.
